Meloja The Paddle 1 course is an beginners kayaking course of the Finnish Canoeing and Rowing Federation (Suomen melonta ja soutuliitto), and teaching it requires certified instructor training. Ella Pasola completed the kayaking instructor training in 2020 and has since worked annually as an instructor for Paddle 1 courses at the Tampere paddling club Tampereen Vihuri.
Kukkia Kayaking courses are organized in small groups of five participants, ensuring plenty of individual guidance. This course provides the basic skills needed to kayak independently and safely in easy conditions.
Kayaking is an amazing way to explore nature. To enjoy the sport safely, it is recommended to complete an introductory course covering the fundamentals of paddling. Good paddling ergonomics also help prevent injuries.
Kayaking courses are held in Kortteenpohja Bay in the northern part of Lake Kukkia. The starting point is Aurinkoniemi in Rautajärvi, approximately 14 km from Luopioinen.
The course consists of two parts:
-Independent online studies (2 hours)
-Practical training with an instructor (10 hours)
The online studies must be completed before the course begins. During the course, participants become familiar with kayaking equipment and kayak touring. They practice basic paddling techniques including forward, backward, and sideways paddling, steering, and turning the kayak. The course also covers kayaking safety topics such as evaluating weather conditions
and what to do in the case of falling.
The price is €168 and includes:
-equipment for the duration of the course (single kayak, paddle, spray skirt, and buoyancy vest)
-practical instruction
-online learning materials
-a digital Paddle 1 certificate card
The Paddle 1 card is proving your paddling skills when you are for example renting kayaks in the countries that have the European paddle pass -system (France, Ireland, England, Slovenia, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany and Italy).
Paddle 1 courses are meant for beginners and paddlers who wish to strengthen their basic skills. No previous kayaking experience is required, but participants must know how to swim. If you have any balance-related issues, please contact me before registering.
